Oh, if only others realized the importance of the printed word. I shudder when I see atrocious spelling and grammatical errors in church publications and on church marquees. It reflects poorly on the entire church. Yes, I'm a spelling and grammar fanatic and feel it's important, no matter your profession, to educate yourself in proper methods of communication.

For all of us that work with First Impressions, Guest Services, or whatever you call your ministry to your guests and your attendees. probably the hardest part of our jobs is keeping informed. We are always struggling to get current information to help us serve our guests well. If all of our church ministry teams would be proactive about getting information to us, it would be so helpful.

I would like to share a way we are able to help answer questions on Sunday mornings or during the week on the phone. We have set up an email account so that we have the option of a "Contact File" in Outlook. Any staff person can have this email account added to their view in Outlook so they have reference too it as they work with people too. We call the email account "Connect." If I have a phone call about "Grief Share Ministry" I can look it up in the Connect "Outlook Contact File." It lists the name of the contact, dates they meet etc. We use the "other" phone number in the contact card to list when the information was last updated. So, if I open a contact card and find the information has not been updated since 6 months ago, I might question if the information is still valid. We can also store PDFs, etc. in this connect card. So, if someone I am speaking too wants the latest brochure on Senior High Ministry. . .it is right at my fingertips to email to them. This connect card system is so helpful too us. Our problem, is getting teams to keep us informed.

All excellent points to use. After having been a secretary for 23 years, I came to realize each time I answered the phone, I had the opportunity to be of help to someone. I found that if I smiled as I talked on the phone, my voice came across most pleasant and inviting. I also found that not talking fast was appreciated by many people as it gave them the opportunity to know who they had called. Besides, talking fast gives the impression that they are too busy, really, to even answer the phone.

This blog hits home with me because I saw it and felt it. I have been to the mega churches from the east coast to west coast and by no means do I mean what I am about to say in negative way. Don't get me wrong, these large churches are making an impact and that is great. But, for a moment, allow me to paint a simplistic picture. Have you ever seen a bull dozer moving a pile of rubble or dirt? It definitely pushes a ton but on both sides of the scooper, there is always overflow and trails left of what got missed. Does it make it a bad scooper? No. It just means that no matter how many mega churches there are on each corner, someone will get missed and that is one person too many. I admit, I never understood the planting of new churches fully until now. Well, I have been in the mega churches where no one said hello to me, even after I reach out and mention that I am from out of town and it falls on deaf ears. I don't blame anyone, I know it happens. I was some of the "extra" pushed to the side and was part of the trail that didn't make it the scoopers pass. When thousands attending, someone is going to be missed if they don't speak up. Well, I was blessed with an opportunity to visit Hope Crossing and see firsthand what Pastor Pat and Pastor Kerry are doing. I was greeted multiple times and was asked many questions and I tell you, I just felt at home. It was a peaceful feeling though so ironic to be surrounded by strangers but left feeling like I knew so many people there. I say that that they are not strangers, but new friends, brothers and sisters in Christ. The Hope Crossing scooper went by and scooped me in and they made sure no one was left behind. I know they are small and have the undivided resources to make this kind of first impression impact, but the impact and impression was purposely made and not just by default. These pastors bring a new focus and gravitational pull to the Word. They will reach the lost, they will reach out and make a difference, one person at a time. So, in harmony with Pastor Kerry's blog, I agree, however one serves in the ministry, take the time to enrich that first impression, because you never know just who you may save.

Really appreciated the insights from the back porch. Customer Service doesn't just happen, we have to educate, train and inspire the servant attitude.

Since resigning from my last assignment, I was faced with the first time in 30 years that I was not on a church staff. My resignation was my choice, but it came because I realized I couldn't lead a congregation that refused to follow. That manifested itself when a group within the church presented a petition seeking my resignation, because they believed it was "time for a change." (This was not the first time this congregation did this) I chose to resign rather than cause the church to go through a battle of defending or attacking me.
There was immediate relief from the pressure of the responsibility, conflict management, and frustration. There was anger, because though others were dictating that my ministry was over there, I believed my ministry was successful. I had invested 11 years in that church and community, endured major challenges, there was evidence of God's working, yet there were those who contended that it was a "time for a change." There was anxiety, because I wasn't sure what the next step would be. There was concern about financial security, concern about being "damaged goods" and how to enter the "job field" again from the sidelines. Add to that the concern for my wife and family, plus friends and followers who were struggling with this seemed to add to the burden.
It's here where I re-learned that you have to practice what you preach. We talk about "trusting the Lord with all our heart," but when you have financial, occupational, and relational security, that often masks a "false" security system.
In the past four months, I have watched as God has provided ministry opportunities, met financial needs, and have watched myself, my wife and family grow in their faith. As difficult as the journey has been, I have found that was part of the preparation process for His next assignment for me.
I once heard it said, "The past is but a prologue to the present. Our future is as bright as our faith in God." I have found what many in the Scriptures discovered, that it is only when you are totally dependent on God, that you truly know what it means to trust in Him.
I would advise all who are on this type of journey to do these things that have been helpful to me...
1. Get into God's word and allow God to speak to you. I camped out at Jeremiah 29:11, Isaiah 40, and Lamentation 3:22-25, for weeks.
2. Seek out your godly friends for encouragement and guidance. Be honest and let them minister to you.
3. Keep your ministry alive by leading a home Bible study, make yourself available to preach or teach, and continue minister to people.
4. If you have to seek secular employment, view it as an opportunity to enter a new mission field rather than just a job that will pay the bills.
5. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path." (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Dear brother Tim!

The Lord spoke to hubby & me and told us to go to California for our summer vacation in August this year. He put a vision of Saddleback church in our hearts and in obedience, we left Italy, not knowing why but just trusting. We arrived in Lake Forest on the 9th.. Any guesses who in the Kingdom this is yet??
I sat through the whole service weeping, completelty moved by the Holy Spirit!
Then, the Lord pointed you out and told us to have prayer with u. Still sobbing my eyes out, I told u how desperate I was to serve the Lord and write books for Him. U prayed with us and touched our hearts deeply with your compassion of Christ and love.
We are the Italians who got baptized last month!!
Buddy & Lynnda were here in Italy 2 days ago and we had dinner together in Florence. I told them how much u had blessed us with your prayer, because a few days after u had prayed,God began to move Mightily. Lynnda told us that u were a famous worhip leader!! Glory!!
May Jesus continue to use your hands, heart and mind and may His Beauty continue to shine through u!
Stay on fire for Him!
We love u!
